Snowmobilers out my window!

Just thought i would post some photo's taken from my office window today. We did get a nice few inches of snow last night. The difference up here in the North Country however, is that the road crews know what they are doing and in no time all the roadways are clear..but we still look like the winter wonderland we are!

Very comfortable temperatures made for some nice snowmobiling for this family today on Prospect Mountain. enjoy the photos!!

Yeah! White Stuff!

Yes! Its snowing again here in the Lake George Region with a chance for a few inches today and then supposedly a few more on Friday night and Monday (New Years Eve). Despite ups and downs in temperatures the snow is holding and snowmobilers should still be able to find some good traveling. From sitting here in my office I look directly out at the Prospect Mountain drive and see that the nice folks at DEC have purposely left the left side of the Veterans Memorial Highway unplowed! That's great--how thoughtful. Note: Unfortunately they put up a beautiful new sign for their entry way last year and evidently dont want it suseptible to the elements so it is covered with a big black tarp. go figure! In any case, there is adequate signage off of exit 21 on the Northway/RT 87 from either direction. its only a short distance.

Also, there are some great trails for those who like to snowshoe. Check out Tongue Mountain, Roger's Rock State Campground both north of Bolton Landing on State RT 9N, or Up Yonda Farm-a state run nature park in Bolton Landing.

Fickle Winter Weather

Rain today and near 40 degree temps are wreaking havoc on our great snow base. Hopefully people got out skiing and snowmobiling yesterday! we are expected to get more snow on Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, workers are busy on the NEW Prospect Mountain Diner. This quintessential 1950's restaurant suffered a devastating fire last May and the entire building had to be torn down along with the original metal diner. Thanks to the dedication of owner Art Leonhard he went "shopping" for a new metal fabricated diner. He found one and it was delivered two weeks ago to the site. workers are now buttoning it up and will build the kitchen part to the rear. Evidently there is going to be a contest (that will benefit the Prospect Family & Child Center) to win a seat opening day to sit in one of the 60 seats that will be available in the diner. The opening event is scheduled for February if all goes as planned. 6 of the original spindle counter chairs were saved from the fire and will installed in a prominant place in the new diner. The diner is located on RT 9 in Lake George. More info to follow with photos and where to purchase raffle tickets.

Prospect Mountain is OPEN to snowmobiles!

The gates are open to the State owned- Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway. This 5.5 mile long drive culminates at a 2030 foot summit which overlooks the southern end of Lake George, Lake George Village and on a clear day--to Vermont. There are three distinct overlook spots. It is breathtaking and a great ride. The roadway is groomed but not plowed and only snowmobiles are allowed during this time of year. Our chamber office is located directly accross the street (Route 9) and we have snowmobile maps and visitor guides in our lobby area which is accessible 24/7.

Getting the word out about Lake George!

GREETINGS FROM LAKE GEORGE- NEW YORK: Here in the land of beautiful lakes, fantastic mountain scenery and lots of great snow we are just getting our feet wet on this thing called "blogging". With another 2-3 inches of the white stuff due in tonight the snowmobilers are having a field day. we handed out at snowmobile maps left and right this afternoon from our chamber office. its really great to see snowmobiles lined up outside of restaurants and pubs in the village. The northern bays and smaller bays on Lake George are starting to freeze over so it wont be long before the ice fishing also gets into full swing. And Winter Carnival in February is not far off....gotta love those outhouse races!! If anyone needs info on our Lake George Region, just let me know--we have an office full!
