There is ice on Lake George but several recent press reports as well as word of mouth reports say that there are some very thin spots and that people need to be very, very careful. We simply have not had the one-two weeks of really cold weather yet to snap up the lake completely. The Lake George Winter Carnival folks are trying to make their events happen but may or will post changes as they occur on their website. its always best to check that out before planning your day. you may need to route to one of their alternate locations if they feel the lake is insufficiently frozen for whatever they had planned to do there.
The chamber has created "Winter pages" on our website now to make searching for hotels, restaurants, attractions and shops that are open year round much easier. The pages also interface with our popular events calendar which lists events being held all over the region. Check it out!
as an update, they are working feverishly on the new "retro looking" Prospect Mountain Diner on RT 9 heading north towards Lake George Village. Its looking pretty good...and very shiny! LOL.
We did receive another 8-12 inches of snow this past Weds and now expect to get some snow every day this week. The snowmobilers should enjoy that. Prospect Mountain's gates are open and welcoming snowmobilers. The landscapes all around here look absolutely beautiful as the snow today is a heavier one that clings to the pine branches, etc....but as always our road crews have done a fantastic job so there is no trouble getting around. thats the difference between the North Country and parts to our south....we know how to handle snow removal.

Ice Fishing is happening on Lake George
The ice fisherman and women have returned. Yesterday the bay between Green Island and Bolton Landing was seeing quite a bit of activity and the parking lot at the town park was at least 1/3rd full. Likewise, the southern basin in LGV (lake George Village) this morning had at least a dozen people out fishing. You may want to check one of my archived blogs on ice fishing that shows a streaming video shot on the lake by an ice fisherman.
Kick off weekend for LG Winter Carnival--i bet that commitee is breathing a "cold sigh" of relief for the ice!

Elvis Festival Info Available!
ELVIS SEEN ON THE BEACH ROAD IN LAKE GEORGE!!

It's never to early to start planning for our 'warmer' weather fun activities and events here in the Lake George Region. Considering it was about 10 degrees outside my back door this morning envisioning a warm sunny day sailing on the lake is even more inviting.
We have had a request posted on the blog for Elvis Fest information. I am happy to oblige as the event group is a member of our chamber so we always have up to date info and closer to the event we will have programs, etc. in our office.

Clean Ice, Clean Water
Yes its winter in the ADKS and that means that many enjoy outdoor activities on the lakes. Its all about fun, fresh air and beautiful scenery but the LGA (Lake George Assoc.) has come up with a good awareness campaign to raise awareness regarding the importance of " Clean Ice, Clean Water" which reminds us that what is on the ice in winter melts into the lake water in spring. The program called "Carry On, Carry Off" encourages people to not leave litter, debris or other articles on the ice during their recreational time this winter season. A very good idea and one that all our fish, fowl, flora and fauna will appreciate. I am sure there are many ice fisherman who are just chomping at the bit to get onto Lake George soon. I think we have at least a few weeks wait unfortunately. Let us know when the bays start freezing!!

spreading the word about LG
Well our warm weather week up here in LG has resulted in shedding of our 2+ foot snow base. it is kinda nice regaining a few of our lost parking spaces and also being able to reach our signboard again to put up new messages! But not to fear...i am sure there is plenty of cold and white stuff coming back very soon.
In the meantime, the LGRCC is on the road. We have teams of people at travel shows in NYC and also in PA. i love going to travel shows and setting up our booth to promote the Lake George region and all of our members. On my trip to PA i had to do a side track and swing by Springfield, MA so i could pick up our 2008 Four Season Vacation Guide which was hot off the presses and not ready in time to be shipped to our office before i left for the travel show. We will have them ready and in stock in our office beginning this coming week. as always they are available in our 24/7 lobby area. our new sized pull out map is chocked with new discount coupons too.
FYI:" there was a great travel article in the NY Times travel section on NYS Ski Areas. check out this link! http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/01/11/travel/escapes/11ski.html?ref=travel
Have a great rest of the weekend. This coming week i will post an update on some special event dates and info for 2008 including; Americade, Elvis Festival, ADK Nationals Car Show, etc.
I would appreciate it if people would bookmark this blog and also tell friends about it! i am starting to feel kinda lonely posting only by myself.

Lake George as a winter wonderland
Although we have been experiencing some unusually warm weather (mid-high 40's) over the past couple days our north country winter wonderland is still a beautiful sight. Snowmobilers have had a great time and through last weekend were still streaming accross our door going onto Prospect Mountain. Our chamber is a popluar spot since we also have a selection of snowmobile maps, travel guides, etc. right in our lobby area which is accessible 24/7. Please feel free to take advantage!!
Right now, the lake is starting to freeze in the smaller bays and along Million Dollar Beach on the southern shore. It looks like it will be some time--unless we get about a two week bitter cold snap-- before she will freeze over. Of course, that is EXACTLY what the Winter Carnival Committee is hoping for!! and so are we!
Winter Carnival is a great, family oriented event series that goes on every weekend in February. There is plenty for the whole family to do---or maybe just watch from a snuggly restaurant seat overlooking the lakefront--oh yes, and perhaps by the fireplace too!
More on winter carnival specifics in an upcoming post!
