Culture and Scenery Never Stop in the ADK's

Just when the final glimpses of a perfect autumn have all but faded away, The Lake George region continues to unfold some terrific reasons to visit us including a Wine & Chocolate Festival, Meet Me in St. Louis, Art Gallery Receptions, Music Concerts, Holiday Showcases and more. Of course, our beautiful scenery never stops either-majestic mountains, scenic lakeside overlooks, meandering hiking trails...roaring fireplaces in restaurants! There are activities and unique things to keep you busy...if you want to be! This coming weekend in the heart of Glens Falls (if you have not seen or experienced their renaissance you need to!) there is the Wine & Chocolate Festival on Friday, Nov. 14th held at the Queensbury Hotel. Meet Me in St. Louis a play put on by the Glens Falls Community Theater continues its run this weekend and there is an Exhibition Reception of Prints by Kristine Croso Tolmie at the Courthouse Gallery of the Lake George Arts Project from 4-6 OM on Saturday, Nov 15th.

For more information on these and a myriad of other cultural, sporting and historical events happening this weekend (or any week for that matter) please check out our online calendar at:

www.lakegeorgechamber.com/chamber_events.asp or call our friendly and knowledgeable staff at 518-668-5755--they have the details and also can offer lodging and restaurant info for the region.
It is true we get a little bit sleepier up here in the North Country during non-summer months, some seasonal only businesses are closed, others limit their hours, but for many people that is the best time to enjoy our natural setting, unwind and enjoy what locals know are the real fruits of living in such a beautiful area. There are great rates at hotels and motels, restaurants offer some wonderful specials and as you can see from our cultural calendars "the beat goes on!". Coming for a visit during our slower seasons also affords you the opportunity to "scope out" where you want to visit when you come back during that much needed summer vacation. We hope you visit us soon....we love to share our ADK's!

Its Restaurant Week in the LG Area

Its Restaurant Week in the Lake George, NY Area! What does this mean? It means that for the modest price of $17.57 dining customers can relish in a 3-course meal at any one of 15 participating restaurants in the area. A sampling of the types of offerings include; Lobster, Prime Rib, Chicken or Shrimp Alfredo's, fantastic Italian and Mexican dishes, Roast Duck, Grilled Salmon and a myriad of other culinary delights. But that's not the half of it!! Each 3-course meal comes with your choice of an appetizer and a dessert.

The hardest part of Restaurant Week is trying to select which ones to try! Since there are 15 to choose from we have tried to help by showing their specialty menus on our website. This way you can see what great varieties are being offered and perhaps try a restaurant you have wanted to get to but never got the chance. Here is a perfect way to try a new eating establishment for a very affordable price. Check out the details including restaurant websites for hours, days of operation and their special menus for the week at: www.LakeGeorgeChamber.com and click on the Restaurant Week icon on the left margin.

Why $17.57? In the year 1757, the British Army controlled Lake George and were garrisoned at Fort William Henry on its southern shore. The French Army moved along the western side of the lake from Montreal and laid siege to the fort. The British were forced to surrender. It is considered one of the high points in the French & Indian War. So much so that centuries later, James Fenimore Cooper wrote a fictional tale using the siege as the basis for his novel, The Last of the Mohicans. The Lake George Area is so rich in history from both the French & Indian War era and the Revolutionary War. Last year there was a major living history reenactment to commemorate the 1757 siege.

Spectacular Weather Forecast- Travers weekend!

Yes, it is August in the Adirondacks. The Racetrack at Saratoga is open and just 25 minutes from the shores of Lake George. This weekend is the famous "Travers Weekend" and so the entire region will be hopping. The weather forecast is looking grand with near mid to high 80's and sunny--thank goodness! We have had our share of cooler than normal temps this summer and a bit more rainfall than most of us would like....however that has all translated out to some of the most beautiful flower beds and plantings in LG Village and at various hotel/motel locations. It also means that we are --believe it or not---starting into what could be a fantastic fall foliage season. Yes, thats right, some of our Maple trees are already starting to show just a peak or two of red leaves. A native "Bolton fella" that i know said that with the combination of moisture and the cool nights we have had (43 degrees when i left for work this morning) our fall will most likely come early and be beautiful!

But back to summer cause we still have a lot of unfinished vaca-mode left in all of us. Around our entire region there are some great things happening from blue grass concerts to boat shows. Don't forget our chamber will also be hosting the 2nd annual LAKE GEORGE AREA RESTAURANT WEEK which runs from Sept. 8-13th and features 15 restaurants offering special 3-course meals for $17.57. the list of restaurants and more info is available now off our home page. More on restaurant week in an upcoming blog entry. We list them all on our events page on our website so check that out. Once school does go back in session our September line up of happenings also gets into high gear again. September and October in the ADK's is in my impression one of the best times of year. There are many festivals, historic sites...and of course those leaves to see and experience. What a time to hike Tongue Mountain!

Family Summer Festival on this Weekend in LG!

Shepard Park on the shores of Lake George is full of craft vendors, artists, activities for all ages as well as some great music and entertainers planned for this entire weekend. The weather is supposed to be quite good on Saturday and spectacular on Sunday. From the looks of the park as i drove into the chamber to work this morning the craft tents set up were filling the park, the flowers along Canada Street and Beach Road are beautiful and everyone was really soaking up the beautiful sunshine. So its a great weekend to come to Lake George! Remember that our chamber office located at 2176 State RT 9 ( just south of the village itself) has many discount coupons, event listing handouts, guides, and discount tickets to major area attractions. Please stop in and say hello and let them know you read our blog!!

Georgie our beloved Lake George "Lake Monster" (and chamber mascot) was out carousing around the village yesterday afternoon. Did you happen to see him? how can you miss a 7 foot tall, hairy, bright green cuddly "nessy" looking character??!!

Anticipating the 4th of July

With a hectic June behind us, the Lake George Region is gearing up for its annual blast of festivals, fireworks and fun celebrating our nation's independence on the 4th of July! This year, since the 4th hits on a Friday there is no doubt that revelers will really come out in droves. That's good for business and a great way to show patriotism at its best. Our chamber posts a complete listing of all the various fireworks shows throughout the region on our website online events calendar. Its worth a few minutes to check that out. Whether you want to view fireworks from a ball field, an amusement park or along the shores of Lake George itself---there are many venues to take your family and friends and enjoy the evening.

If you are gushing over the fact that gas prices are creating a dent in your vacation plans there are lots of ways to save some bucks on gas and use it towards things that are much more appealing like mementoes, a savory meal, a hole in one at mini-golf, or a ticket to a local attraction or family amusement park.

Some money saving tips for your visit to Lake George, NY

(1) Visit http://www.lakegeorgechamber.com/ and print out money saving coupons to area restaurants, attractions and shops.
(2) stop by the chamber office and pick up a schedule for the North and South Trolley routes. The trolleys run constantly between Bolton Landing to Lake George and Lake George to Glens Falls and for $1 per person (either north or south routes)-- (5 year olds and under ride free) it can save you gas and parking fees. Besides, their a fun ride themselves!
(3) pick up a free map at the village visitor center that has even more discounts and also helps you plan your driving trips (if needed at all) most efficiently around the region.
(4) enjoy "the Northway", Route 87 in all its splendor. Slow down to 55-60MPH is becoming more the norm with many local drivers. Slowing down saves gas $$ and you get to enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery..and maybe even see a bald eagle, bear or native deer enroute.
(5) Canadian visitors should contact the Lake George Regional Chamber to obtain their free Canadian Bienvenue Discount Card. this card is recognized at over 40 local businesses who offer discounts when shown by visitors.
(6) some hotels, motels and restaurants offer mid-week special discounts, check them out and you can save a bundle.
(7) Discounted Great Escape tickets can be purchased directly at the chamber office as well saving you $$ and time by not having to stand in line. This can add up significantly if you are traveling with the whole family!

Remember...our Lake George Region is less than a tank away from the major metro areas of Montreal, NYC, Albany and even Boston --so come and visit!

Americade 2008 Tours in and Out of Lake George

Once again, our region played host to the Americade Tour Expo which annually brings in over 45-50,000 motorcycle touring enthusiasts from all over the country...no... make that all over the world! This year i had the pleasure of meeting a woman who was purchasing a whole lot of yummy goodies at the Perfect Blend Cafe in Maynard Square on Canada Street--she was from the UK. One word out of her mouth confirmed it...what a lovely accent! In any case, she explained to me and the owner of the cafe, Adele that she and her husband ship their bikes here and have been coming over for the past 6 years. This was her 7th Americade and she loves it! Last year I met a lovely gentleman from Israel.

While working at the Lake George Rotary booth at the Holiday Inn on Monday and Tuesday of Americade week as a volunteer I had the pleasure of meeting people from Wisconsin, California, Texas, Connecticut, lots of folks from New Jersey (my home state-have to give that a plug) , tons of folks from Canada (they are so glad their money is worth more here now) and of course a great throng of New York folks who just love the fact that they have this beautiful region to call their own playground in the mountains.

By all accounts the event was another great year! My friends from New Jersey who have been coming for the past 6+ years and stay at the Twin Pines on Trout Lake in Diamond Point had a marvelous time once again. They spent a good part of the time in LGV, at the Americade Trade Show and then did day outings to Lake Placid and touring our beautiful mountain countrysides.

Economically, according to a SUNY Plattsburg study conducted last year, Americade Tour Rally is responsible for a $46 million dollar economic impact to our region. Some businesses in the area would not exist...or at minimum could not sustain through a rainy summer without having Americade as the lead position of opening season in the Adirondacks. Is there a downside? yes, for one week we listen to motorcycles, we stand in line at a restaurant or at a gas station ( they only take a few gallons of the precious stuff to fill their bikes), it takes a bit longer to get out of your driveway or parking lot (which as one savvy business person told me just "ka-chings" money in her mind) and the upside...besides great for business? we learn that there is a lot to be said about aging gracefully, with great spirit and the wind in your hair---many Americade participants are well into their 60's, 70's and 80's and enjoying the ride more now than when they were 20!

We would love to hear your comments about Americade!

WOW.. This weather-gets visitors coming early!

One would almost think that summer has come to the Lake George Region in the Adirondacks! but wait....what is that? there is still snow on my mountain in Bolton Landing--so lets not be too quick to think we have escaped all remnants of winter! From what I understand...what we had was a "typical old fashioned winter here"...and lingering snow is part of that mix. However, it still amazes me that we can have 8 days of mid -60-70 degree weather and still have snow ladden forests and streambed rocks. It is beautiful!
Just the same, our mid-70's degree sunny weather has foisted us into some great opening days to the season. Last week, while enjoying a lunch out on the sunny deck of JC Montana's restaurant on Canada Street my friend and I could not help but notice the literal "throngs" of people. The restaurants that were open had small waiting lines to get a seat outdoors!! Bless those outside cafe's started last year--now business owners have to scramble to get them re-installed. Kinda seems silly to have to take them down in the first place but that was the Village rule. In any case, Kudo's to those businesses who in a flurry opened their doors, put on their smiles--greeted the visitors and fired up their cash registers!! Reports have it from one business on Canada Street that business on Saturday was amazingly close to volume of a typical Americade day. Now that IS SAYING SOMETHING!

When a Channel 8 news reported stopped in my office to do a story on the rising gas prices and how they were going to affect tourism, I said---now IS THE TIME, but here is NOT THE PLACE, "lets go down to the lakeside and enjoy the sun, the water and of course--this one in a million view!" So off we went and enjoyed ourselves while doing business. Any excuse I can get (or for that matter our hundreds of thousands of annual visitors can get) to come away and escape to "THE LAKE" is a good enough reason for me. I still have to pinch myself that I have been so fortunate to live right here in this majestic place.

Some may say that late spring is still not the time for a visit to LG. I beg to differ. While its true that not all the businesses are open--many are, at least on the weekends. But the clear sky, the little bit of crispness in the air and the warm sun are a magical recipe. Putting in a canoe or kayak can yield the paddler and up close and intimate rendezvous with a Loon and his family or the awesome sight of a bald eagle or deer who have come to feed on remote lakeshores. If you are into white water rafting---there is NO BETTER TIME than now! There is plenty to see and do and places to stay. The area is waking up and we are loving the folks who have already come to visit and get a jump on summer!
Please let me know if there are topics of interest that you would like to see covered in my blog about the Lake George Region. I would be happy to oblige if possible!

Next week.....info about Americade and Elvis!

Dunham's Bay Resort Hosts Great Chamber Mixer

Many thanks go out to the folks at Dunham's Bay Resort for their wonderful hospitality in hosting one of our Business After Hours Mixer's last evening. Sitting at the head of Dunham's Bay the view is simply breathtaking (and sure is good to see NO signs of ice!) and we could not help but feel that spring and the new summer season is around the corner. We had a very nice turn out of members and it was especially great to have three of our newest member businesses on hand; Adirondack Winery, Paychex, Inc-K. Delsignore and Ballooning Adventures! Our chamber mixers are a great way for members, prospective members and new members to meet, greet and network. I saw some great cross-marketing talk going on between retailers and hoteliers, accommodations and restaurant owners. That type of event is what a chamber is all about. Thanks again Rex Moon (Marketing Director) and Mark Childs (General Manager & Executive Chef) from Dunham's Bay Resort for making this event such a great one!

Hey...there are people out there!!

It is always great to know that somewhere, at some point in a busy day...someone has had a chance to visit our blog. It makes the time spent feel worthwhile for sure. Well, Lake George is coming alive slow but sure. In Bolton Landing there are still places with two feet of snow (like my backyard!) but in LG Village signs of spring are happening. The shop keepers are starting to restock, spiff up storefronts and the village crews are starting their rounds. I even saw some crocus blooming in Queensbury yesterday! We have several new stores that have opened over the late winter and a few more soon to open in spring.

You simply have to check out the new bakery on the side street going to the Mini-Chopper food store. Old fashioned bakery feel with simply luscious things to eat! Also new and soon to open will be Adirondack Winery on Canada Street. They are up in the new building opposite Shepard Park. Visit them at www.adirondackwinery.com. They are new members to the chamber and we wish them well.

In the next coming weeks LG Village will be hosting many tried and true events that bring in thousands of visitors. I will be posting details of event info soon so please come back to visit.

Tourist Rail line Expansion Opens up Expanded Tourism Possibilities

The Warren County Supervisors have a tough job on a week by week, day by day basis. The decisions they make affect every segment of our business climate and the quality of life for area residents. At a recent meeting I attended (I try to attend as many as my schedule will permit) one topic of hot discussion was the continued funding and support for the expansion of the "tourist rail" lines that could eventually link the North Creek Station to Saratoga. The County is already in for a considerable amount of funds as well as a signer on a grant that would infuse more dollars. The question appears to lie on just how much more will need to be spent and should additional funds be allocated and sought to build "real stations" at strategic points or would simple platforms suffice.

What a blissful marriage this historic tourist rail program would be! Saratoga is already an easy destination for NYC dwellers who do not own cars but can easily get to Saratoga via rail. Having that additional amenity of a rail connection to North Creek could enhance not only the viability of this quintessential North Country village year round--but also provide viable reasons for economic development and tourism promotion to the small towns and villages that dot the tracks along the way. Towns like Thurman, Stony Creek and even Lake Luzerne (though over the river) can and would all benefit from this added rail link with creative and progressive thinking and their own communities support. There are special interest hobbiests and clubs who seek out historic rail excursions, and non-profit groups have already seen some great results from hosting events on the train. I can envision full schedules of fall foliage tours, Christmas Holiday Santa Trains, School trips, Red Hatters, Senior bus tours, etc. etc. A growing Destination Wedding marketing effort is panning out as well! (see our article in our 08 vacation guide which highlights the Upper Hudson River Railroad and a wedding held there). As part of being able to lure tour operators to our region having a unique cache of itineraries to offer is key to landing them here.

Our economic tourism generator is always in need of new things to keep our region fresh and competative. When we, as a chamber, go promoting our region at national travel expos it is normally the first or second question we get asked...."what is new??" Of course this is always what media and travel writers want to know as well. It behooves us, our tourism-based businesses and yes, the county fathers and mothers to always be looking for opportunity when it comes knocking...or in this case...tooting its whistle!

APA seeking input on Snowmobile trail access

Is snowmobiling threatened in the Lake George Area? The Adirondack Park Agency recently published a press release noting they are seeking public comment and opinions regarding snowmobiling in the Adirondack Park.

From this writers viewpoint---(literally looking out at a major snowmobile hub at Prospect Mtn), --Snowmobiling in the Lake George Region is key to the economic viability of our region in the winter months. We have year round flag hotels that are depending on a growing winter and year round season to survive. Our Winter Carnival events each weekend in February have many events which capture the attention and support of snowmobilers. Several recent news articles have noted that the proposals on the table would enhance some trail access and broaden linkages between hamlets and towns. It bears review and a deeper look into!

According to the APA article, the public comments are "being gathered as the agency will be reviewing its policies in early March regarding the extent of snowmobiling in the Adirondacks". APA Staffers and Dept. of Environmental Conservation representatives presented their recommendations to the APA on Feb 7. These recommendations "propose limiting snowmobile trails to 849 miles".

We encourage our blog readers to check out the proposal directly and forward comments to the APA quickly. According to the news article which appeared in the Adirondack Journal recently, you can access the APA proposal and comment section at:

Lake George Region Looses "Mind's Eye" Naturalist Photographer-Richard "Dick" Dean

It is with deep regret that we acknowledge the passing of Richard "Dick" Dean who for decades has been recognized as the pre-eminent naturalist photographer in the Adirondacks and our Lake George Region. Many in the area know that I am "a new comer--and most likely will be one for as long as I live--and that's okay with my fresh eyes. One of the very first things I recognized having only moved to the region four years ago was that no matter where I went, or what website I used to research before my move I was continually reminded of the magnificent and sheer natural splendor of this area through the eyes of Mr. Dean and his "Dean Color" hallmark. It is that "minds eye" way of looking through the lens of a camera that makes a split second in our world part of a lasting legacy on printed paper.

As I have the pleasure to now visit so many businesses in our area as the Executive Director of the Lake George Regional Chamber I am reminded how many people understand, recognize and value his work as well--and have for generations. Each week I see his photographs in a shop, office, reception area, hotel guest room, or at minimum on countless websites. the Dean photographic image of Lake George and our beautiful Adirondack Mountains is all around us. I would venture a guess that many of our visitors to the area carry home their own framed photo or at minimum send a postcard with a Dean Color image on it. Here at the chamber we commissioned Mr. Dean many, many years ago to create a plethora of photographs for us to use in our marketing and media work. Many of these images are still used today by our staff because they are as timeless as the subject matter itself.

While one of his daughters remarked recently that she ventured " millions of copies have been made of Dad's photographs over the years" I can honestly say that each time you see one its like you are sitting at that very moment seeing that sunset, casting out that line or turning to see the snowfall on the branch for the very first time. Our area has truly lost a legacy-- who through his generous eyes we all can benefit for future generations to come.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the entire Dean Family. Dean Color has been a member of our chamber for many, many years and helped to shape the "Minds eye" image of the Lake George Region forever.

Spoke too soon!

There is ice on Lake George but several recent press reports as well as word of mouth reports say that there are some very thin spots and that people need to be very, very careful. We simply have not had the one-two weeks of really cold weather yet to snap up the lake completely. The Lake George Winter Carnival folks are trying to make their events happen but may or will post changes as they occur on their website. its always best to check that out before planning your day. you may need to route to one of their alternate locations if they feel the lake is insufficiently frozen for whatever they had planned to do there.

The chamber has created "Winter pages" on our website now to make searching for hotels, restaurants, attractions and shops that are open year round much easier. The pages also interface with our popular events calendar which lists events being held all over the region. Check it out!

as an update, they are working feverishly on the new "retro looking" Prospect Mountain Diner on RT 9 heading north towards Lake George Village. Its looking pretty good...and very shiny! LOL.

We did receive another 8-12 inches of snow this past Weds and now expect to get some snow every day this week. The snowmobilers should enjoy that. Prospect Mountain's gates are open and welcoming snowmobilers. The landscapes all around here look absolutely beautiful as the snow today is a heavier one that clings to the pine branches, etc....but as always our road crews have done a fantastic job so there is no trouble getting around. thats the difference between the North Country and parts to our south....we know how to handle snow removal.

Ice Fishing is happening on Lake George

The ice fisherman and women have returned. Yesterday the bay between Green Island and Bolton Landing was seeing quite a bit of activity and the parking lot at the town park was at least 1/3rd full. Likewise, the southern basin in LGV (lake George Village) this morning had at least a dozen people out fishing. You may want to check one of my archived blogs on ice fishing that shows a streaming video shot on the lake by an ice fisherman.

Kick off weekend for LG Winter Carnival--i bet that commitee is breathing a "cold sigh" of relief for the ice!

Elvis Festival Info Available!

ELVIS SEEN ON THE BEACH ROAD IN LAKE GEORGE!!
It's never to early to start planning for our 'warmer' weather fun activities and events here in the Lake George Region. Considering it was about 10 degrees outside my back door this morning envisioning a warm sunny day sailing on the lake is even more inviting.

We have had a request posted on the blog for Elvis Fest information. I am happy to oblige as the event group is a member of our chamber so we always have up to date info and closer to the event we will have programs, etc. in our office.

Clean Ice, Clean Water

Yes its winter in the ADKS and that means that many enjoy outdoor activities on the lakes. Its all about fun, fresh air and beautiful scenery but the LGA (Lake George Assoc.) has come up with a good awareness campaign to raise awareness regarding the importance of " Clean Ice, Clean Water" which reminds us that what is on the ice in winter melts into the lake water in spring. The program called "Carry On, Carry Off" encourages people to not leave litter, debris or other articles on the ice during their recreational time this winter season. A very good idea and one that all our fish, fowl, flora and fauna will appreciate. I am sure there are many ice fisherman who are just chomping at the bit to get onto Lake George soon. I think we have at least a few weeks wait unfortunately. Let us know when the bays start freezing!!

spreading the word about LG

Well our warm weather week up here in LG has resulted in shedding of our 2+ foot snow base. it is kinda nice regaining a few of our lost parking spaces and also being able to reach our signboard again to put up new messages! But not to fear...i am sure there is plenty of cold and white stuff coming back very soon.

In the meantime, the LGRCC is on the road. We have teams of people at travel shows in NYC and also in PA. i love going to travel shows and setting up our booth to promote the Lake George region and all of our members. On my trip to PA i had to do a side track and swing by Springfield, MA so i could pick up our 2008 Four Season Vacation Guide which was hot off the presses and not ready in time to be shipped to our office before i left for the travel show. We will have them ready and in stock in our office beginning this coming week. as always they are available in our 24/7 lobby area. our new sized pull out map is chocked with new discount coupons too.

FYI:" there was a great travel article in the NY Times travel section on NYS Ski Areas. check out this link! http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/01/11/travel/escapes/11ski.html?ref=travel

Have a great rest of the weekend. This coming week i will post an update on some special event dates and info for 2008 including; Americade, Elvis Festival, ADK Nationals Car Show, etc.

I would appreciate it if people would bookmark this blog and also tell friends about it! i am starting to feel kinda lonely posting only by myself.

Lake George as a winter wonderland

Although we have been experiencing some unusually warm weather (mid-high 40's) over the past couple days our north country winter wonderland is still a beautiful sight. Snowmobilers have had a great time and through last weekend were still streaming accross our door going onto Prospect Mountain. Our chamber is a popluar spot since we also have a selection of snowmobile maps, travel guides, etc. right in our lobby area which is accessible 24/7. Please feel free to take advantage!!

Right now, the lake is starting to freeze in the smaller bays and along Million Dollar Beach on the southern shore. It looks like it will be some time--unless we get about a two week bitter cold snap-- before she will freeze over. Of course, that is EXACTLY what the Winter Carnival Committee is hoping for!! and so are we!

Winter Carnival is a great, family oriented event series that goes on every weekend in February. There is plenty for the whole family to do---or maybe just watch from a snuggly restaurant seat overlooking the lakefront--oh yes, and perhaps by the fireplace too!
More on winter carnival specifics in an upcoming post!
